If your ranking goes down because of Google's update then follow these off page steps:

1. Mainly use unique content for your website
2. Focus on brand name (like promote your company name for which you are doing promotion work)
3. Don't create a bulk submission or Don't create any unnatural links
4. Give preference to Forum Posting & Yahoo Answering
5. Submit your website into High PR directory and Bookmarking site
6. Include SMO part into your promotion work

Hope all these things will help your website to rank back if your website is hit by the google updates.
